![]() A little bit of moisture facilitates the exchange of air into and out of their bodies, but too much moisture inhibits this process, essentially suffocating them. Worms have no lungs, and instead breathe directly through their skin. While worms need to be moist at all times, it turns out that they can’t handle too much water. This behavior obviously makes the robins happy, but I can’t imagine it’s all that good for the worms themselves. But April showers always seem to bring something else out worth noticing – earthworms! A walk in the neighborhood the morning after a spring rainstorm reveals pink, wiggling – or sometimes not wiggling – worms on the sidewalks, streets, and lawns. They become a nuisance when they are found in large numbers on sidewalks, driveways, patios, pools and other places where they are not wanted.Download file | Play in new window | Duration: 5:06 | Recorded on Earthworm (Nightcrawler)Īs we enter into May, the familiar old rhyme of ‘April showers bring May flowers’ is proving to be true. You may see nightcrawlers moving away from the lawn when the lawns are overwatered or after heavy rainfall. In late spring and summer, when the weather becomes warmer, nightcrawlers move deeper into the soil and are not normally seen.Mounds are most common in early to mid-spring when nightcrawlers are first active.Mounds do not harm the turf but this lumpiness can be a nuisance to home lawns, athletic fields and golf courses. They deposit castings at their burrow entrances forming cone-shaped mounds at the soil surface.Nightcrawlers are beneficial to lawn health but can leave behind a waste product called castings. If you use them for fishing bait, throw away any unused worms in the trash. Never release an earthworm in a natural forest. Nightcrawlers and other earthworms are considered invasive species and damage forest floors.
